5th Annual Family Farm Fest Scheduled for Saturday July 28
Posted: Jul 9, 2012

Lakeshore Harvest Country, Inc. announces the fifth annual Family Farm Fest on Saturday, July 28, 2012. This year’s theme is “Plants and Pollen” and offers many hands-on activities based on farm life. A  day of celebrating locally grown and family farms.  Experience “Farm, Fresh, FUN!”

The farms of Lakeshore Harvest Country will introduce fictional characters young Farmer Jane and young Farmer John during Family Farm Fest. The young farmers will learn about the importance of Plants & Pollen during their journey to these local family farms. Kids will receive a FREE prize at each of Lakeshore Harvest Country farm sites.  (Thanks to the generous support of Harris Seed Co.)

U-pick & We-pick opportunities, wagon rides, games with prizes, craft projects, seasonal fresh fruits and vegetables, homespun hospitality, wine tasting, farm animals and farm activities for kids of all ages. Lakeshore Harvest Country farms are located along the Lake Michigan shoreline between Saugatuck and South Haven.

Special Family Farm Fest activities are scheduled from 10:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. and include:

Enjoy u-pick opportunities (raspberries and blueberries), at Riverbend Farm, Stephenson’s Farms and Dee’s Lakeshore Farm.

View and learn about farm animals at Overhiser Orchards and Khnemu Studio on Fernwood Farm. Watch chicks hatching at Fernwood Farm.

Families should plan to spend several hours, including lunch, in Lakeshore Harvest Country. McIntosh Apple Orchards and Winery will be cooking up deep fried hot dogs with a South Haven twist, with hamburgers and fresh cider as additional options. Ice cream and pies are available from Dutch Farm Market, and kids can have fun at our playground. Wine tasting is available at McIntosh Apple Orchards & Fenn Valley Vineyards & Winery.

“Kids love to make their free craft project each year, this year they will create a chicken made from a gourd we grew here on Fernwood Farm” says Dawn Soltysiak of Khnemu Studio on Fernwood Farm.  “Our u-pick flower patch will be blooming. I love to see families enjoying our farm.”

“Rain or shine, this is a day packed with farm fun,” Kim Overhiser of Overhiser Orchards says. “The farmers gear up for families; we both show and tell what farm life is like and this year our focus is on plants and pollen.  We will have educational storyboards and the Overhiser Kids Critter Barn open”

Theresa Wiley of Dee’s Lakeshore Farm explains the beneficial relationship between the farm’s bees and the fruit trees on the farm. “We will have beekeeping information and equipment on site.”

Kids may pick up a game “passport” from any Lakeshore Harvest Country member farm and get a farm relevant prize while traveling from farm to farm.  People of all ages submitting photos taken that day will have the opportunity to win a $25 gift certificate good at Lakeshore Harvest Country farm markets if their photograph is selected as a winner.

Pick up a Lakeshore Harvest Country brochure and map at any of the farms, also available at the Saugatuck or South Haven Visitors’ Bureau.  More information, including addresses of all farms and a map of farm locations, is located online at    Or, contact Lakeshore Harvest Country event chairperson Dawn Soltysiak (269)236-9260 or by email,
