Tap Into a Winter Cider Aged in Bourbon Barrels
Chicago, IL (February 13, 2013)—Virtue Cider unveils its third cider, The Mitten, today--the cider is available in limited release and in draft format in Chicago. A blend of last season’s best cider, which was aged in twelve-year old bourbon barrels for nine months, and this season’s fresh pressed apple juice, The Mitten is a rich and complex cider ideal for the last stretch of winter.
Michigan is known to many as the Mitten State: when you hold your left hand palm out, fingers together and thumb extended, it looks like the Lower Peninsula. Hence the cider’s name, The Mitten, named after the state in which it was produced.
The bourbon barrels impart characteristic notes of vanilla, caramel, and charred American oak to The Mitten that are a counterpoint to the sweet, tart, earthy notes from the overripe, fresh juice, and strike a balance of acid and mild tannin. Not as tart as Virtue’s other ciders, RedStreak and Lapinette, The Mitten pairs well with wintery foods like a rich beef stew, cassoulet, meatloaf, or even a sharp, salty blue cheese.
Virtue is the hard cider venture, launched in June 2011, by Gregory Hall, former Brewmaster at Goose Island Brewing Company, and co-founder Stephen Schmakel. A branch-to-bottle enterprise, Virtue’s mission is to make a series of English, French and Spanish style ciders that pair well with food and support small farmers, using the highest quality heirloom apple varieties while giving back to the community.
Virtue unveiled its first cider house in December 2012 at its 48-acre Virtue Farms in Fennville, Michigan [2170 62nd Street, Fennville, MI 49408]. Designed by Chicago-based architects, Boeman Design, the cider house evokes the character of farms and cider houses in Normandy, France and is the first of several buildings planned for the property.
