SCA Farmers Market

SCA Farmers Market opens, introduces SNAP and Double Up Food Bucks programs

SAUGATUCK, MI—May 12, 2015—The Saugatuck Center for the Arts (400 Culver Street) opens for the season Friday, May 22 with more than 30 vendors offering everything from artisan cheeses to baked goods, flowers, knife sharpening services, furniture, dog treats and its trademark fresh produce.  The market is held every Friday, through September 25, from 9 am – 3pm in the SCA’s parking lot.

This summer SNAP cards and “Double Up Food Bucks” will be accepted as payment methods. This is the first year the SCA Farmers Market is participating in these federal food-purchasing assistant programs. The two programs, SNAP (formerly known as the Food Stamp Program) and Double Up Food Bucks, give eligible, low-income individuals and families the opportunity to purchase healthy, local food options. The Double Up Food Bucks program is complementary to federal nutrition assistance programs by doubling the value of money spent on fresh produce at participating farmers markets and grocery stores.

“The Farmers Market plays a number of roles in our community,” said Bill Galligan, SCA Market Manager. “We are very excited to participate in these programs so we can  bring the freshest possible food products to the greatest number of people in  our community.”

This summer’s SCA Farmers Market has more than  30 vendors on board including long-time participants and new businesses. All vendors at the market have grown, produced, or created the goods they sell.

“The market is a vehicle for emerging entrepreneurs to try out their product ideas such as jams and jellies, baked goods, spices and artisan goods,” said Galligan. “We’re looking forward another season, and we can’t wait to welcome back our vendors.”
