The Fennville Arts Movement – Encouraging Creativity
Posted: Nov 4, 2011

It is no secret that Fennville residents have a lot of creative energy.  For Susan Park, Michele Overweg Spans, and Casey Boeve, this creativity comes in the form of the Fennville Arts Movement.  Both Boeve and Overweg Spans were students of Susan Park, a retired art teacher from Fennville High School.  When the three were approached about creating an organization to highlight all aspects of art in Fennville, they jumped at the chance.

Of the movement, Boeve says,“There are so many creative people in Fennville, and it’s not just limited to your typical painters, photographers, or sculptors.  We want to showcase culinary artists, cinematographers, dancers, and writers.  Art is what you make of it, and we want to encourage people to find that creativity within them.”

The Fennville Arts movement has hosted many events in the past year and a half of their existence.  With live bands and working artist demonstrating their craft, Art Jam was a success its first year.  “It really brought together the artists of the area, and encouraged them to not just show off their final product, but to show people how their pieces get from an idea to a finished point.”  Said Boeve.  Other FAM events have included Plein Air painting, watercolor classes, a sculpture scavenger hunt, holiday artist markets and ornament decorating, and a costume carnival.

Every Tuesday during November this year, the Fennville Arts Movement will be hosting a Classic Film Series from 5:30-8PM.  Located at the Fennville District Library, the public is encouraged to come on out and enjoy the art of cinematography through classic movies like Psycho, Chitty, Chitty, Bang Bang, It’s a Wonderful Life and more!

The Fennville Arts Movement will also be hosting a Holiday Art Hang at Salt of the Earth in December, featuring an opening reception with participating artists in attendance, on Saturday, December 3, from 11am-3pm.  For more information about the Fennville Arts Movement or any events, contact Casey Boeve at 616.990.3077 or visit www.fennvilleartsmovement.com.

Fennville will hold it’s holiday celebration the first weekend in December.  A joint celebration between the Greater Fennville Area Chamber of Commerce and the Downtown Development Authority, the holiday celebration will include a visit from Santa and Mrs. Clause, parade, holiday crafts at the library, a Holiday Art Hang put on by the Fennville Arts Movement at Salt of the Earth, the tree lighting ceremony and more!
