COPYRIGHTED GREATER FENNVILLE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE
Greater Fennville Chamber of Commerce
P.O. Box 484 Fennville, MI  49408
TUESDAYS IN THE PARK

The third concert of the
Seventh Annual Fennville
“Tuesdays in the Park”
free community concert
series is coming up Tuesday
July 7 and will feature the
Kalamazoo based Tejano
band Los Bandits de
Michigan. The concert will be
held at Memorial/Paradise
Park on north Maple ST,
downtown Fennville. Music
begins at 7PM. In case of
inclement weather the
concert will be moved to the
lower level of the Fennville District Library.

Back by popular demand, Los Bandits de Michigan
features Fennville native Guillermo ‘Willie” Martinez on
accordion and vocals and his longtime musical partner
Rene Meave on guitar. Brothers Steve and Ernie Ortiz,
also Fennville natives, round out the band on drums and
bass.

Los Bandits calls its music “Tex-Mex, Michigan style”; a
mixing of rhythm and blues, gospel and country rock
influences with Norteno and Tejano performance style
and instrumentation. They have a big, rousing,
danceable sound that gets listeners on their feet in short
order. There’s also an element of social consciousness
expressed through their original compositions, some of
which deal with the plight of farm workers. Los Bandits de
Michigan formed in 1991, but each of its individual
members has over 20 years of musical experience. Rene
Meave and Guillermo Martinez both began their musical
careers in Texas and came to Michigan as migrant
workers. An accomplished songwriter, Meave has been
recognized by Billboard and the American Song Festival
for the originality of his compositions. Martinez is also a
songwriter and a poet whose works dealing with issues of
social justice for farm workers have been featured at
local talks by the late Cesar Chavez. The group has
been featured at national events such as the Tejano
Awards Fanfare in San Antonio and the National Council
of La Raza 25th Anniversary Conference. In 1999, the
Michigan Hispanic Caucus and the Governor of Michigan
paid special tribute to Rene and Guillermo for their
contributions to Tex-Mex music. Los Bandits’ recent
recordings include “Tex-Mex Del Midwest” and “Live En
El State Theatre, Los Bandits”.
