LOS BANDITS TO
APPEAR
The Fifth Annual Fennville “Tuesdays in the Park” free
community concert series continues on July 10, 2007 with
Tex-Mex band Los Bandits. The concert will be held at
Memorial/Paradise Park on north Maple ST, downtown
Fennville. Music begins at 7PM.
Back by popular demand, Los Bandits features Fennville
native Guillermo ‘Willie” Martinez on accordion and vocals
and his longtime musical partner Rene Meave on guitar.
Greg Orr, bass guitar; David Garcia drums; and Steve
Vandenburg, guitar/vocals round out the group. Los
Bandits’ style reflects the richness of Tex-Mex music by
combining rhythm and blues, gospel, country, rock,
Norteno and Tejano music. Los Bandits bring an
alternative world beat sound that appeals to a very diverse
audience.
This Kalamazoo-based conjunto calls its music “Tex-Mex,
Michigan style”, a mixing of rhythm and blues, gospel and
country rock influences with Norteno and Tejano
performance style and instrumentation. They have a big,
rousing and danceable sound that gets listeners on their
feet in short order. There’s also an element of social
consciousness expressed through their original
compositions, some of which deal with the plight of farm
workers. Los Bandits formed in 1991, but each of its
individual members has over 20 years of musical
experience. Rene Meave and Guillermo Martinez both
began their musical careers in Texas and came to
Michigan as migrant workers. An accomplished songwriter,
Meave has been recognized by Billboard and the American
Song Festival for the originality of his compositions.
Martinez is also a songwriter and a poet whose works
dealing with issues of social justice for farm workers have
been featured at local talks by the late Cesar Chavez. The
group has been featured at national events such as the
Tejano Awards Fanfare in San Antonio and the National
Council of La Raza 25th Anniversary Conference. In 1999,
the Michigan Hispanic Caucus and the Governor of
Michigan paid special tribute to Rene and Guillermo for
their contributions to Tex-Mex music. Los Bandits’ recent
recordings include “Tex-Mex Del Midwest” and “Live En El
State Theatre, Los Bandits”.
Free to the public, the concerts are sponsored by Greater
Fennville Chamber of Commerce businesses. The series
will continues every other Tuesday through August 8. In
case of inclement weater, the event will be held at
Fennville District Library. Concessions will be available with
all proceeds going the Chamber of Commerce Scholarship
fund.
